Mineral Survey, Ripon

A quarrying company secured the rights to carry out a coring survey of surrounding fields, to assess the depth and nature of the Limestone deposits.

Features:

  • Drilling to recover P size cores
  • Detailed logging

In late August 2024, one of our rotary rigs embarked on what was initially a 3-week phase of work, to target the Limestone and recover cores for laboratory analysis.

The aim was to establish the amount of overburden and then recover continuous core samples to the base of the Limestone. Due to the success of the initial survey and the quality of the core recovery, the work was extended by 4 weeks to cover a larger area.

The Project Manager, Richard, has the following glowing praise for our teams,

‘’I used SIS on a previous project in 2023 and came straight to Helen with this latest round of work. The drillers have been a pleasure to work with – diligent, professional and obliging always. I appreciate the effort Helen put into accommodating our request to extend the work. Increasing a job by 4 weeks is a tall ask, especially as the drillers were staying away from home, but Helen made it happen and it meant the work could be completed before the fields were re-planted. We’ll certainly be calling SIS for the next round of boreholes.’’

Core recovery is a type of drilling that requires accuracy and good judgement, as Helen explains,

‘’The purpose of the coring in this instance was to establish the quantity and quality of the mineral. Each 1.5m core run is recovered in clear, plastic liner and immediately placed into core boxes to maintain the integrity of the sample. Our data directs some very important and potentially expensive decisions, so careful logging is as important as the drilling.

Our drillers really enjoyed this job; great client, great location…..and great beer in the local Wetherspoons (so I’m told.)’’
