Spring and summer usually bring a surge in demand for our water well services, with many customers deciding it’s the perfect time to invest in their own water source.
Alongside our usual enquiries—from fishing lakes, caravan sites, and farmers—we’ve seen a noticeable increase in interest from a new sector.
“This year, I’ve spoken with many customers embracing the off-grid lifestyle,” Director, Helen, explains. “With land secured in some truly beautiful parts of Lincolnshire, their next step is setting up an independent water supply.”
Their first call is to Anglian Water. Their second call is to us, having found out just how expensive a mains water connection can be.
A water well presents a viable alternative across much of Lincolnshire, but success depends heavily on local geology, which, in a few areas, can be less than cooperative.
“For some of our customers this year, the entire future of their off-grid dream has hinged on whether we can find them water,” says our Drilling Manager, Mark. “Fortunately, we’ve got broad shoulders—and we love a challenge. If there’s water there, we’ll find it.”
Where there’s uncertainty, there are still options—such as a prognosis report or a full hydrogeological survey. However, these services do carry costs, and even then, the results may not provide a definitive answer either way.
For roughly the same cost, we can carry out a test drill: a practical approach that involves mobilising a rig to site, drilling to a set depth, and finding out—once and for all—if there’s water beneath your feet.
While some drilling companies offer a ‘No Water, No Fee’ deal, we steer clear—those offers can muddy the water (pun fully intended).
“What some people don’t realise is that we’re not just looking for water,” explains Mark. “If we find water, there must be enough to sustain a pump and deliver a reliable supply to the surface. We’ve heard too many stories of fly-by-night operators demanding payment, even when the supply is nowhere near viable.”
Our customers, Chris and Andrew are happy to advocate for this proposal.
‘’We were disappointed to hear we might not be in a good area for water, but we appreciated Helen’s honesty. Better than we were aware of the risks so we could make an informed decision before we spent any money. Anglian Water had quoted nearly £100,000 to install a mains connection and so it made sense to proceed,’’ says Chris.
Andrew picks up the story,
‘’We had a few nerve-wracking days, hoping to see water via the CCTV cameras and were thrilled to receive the good news that there was water, and quite a lot of it. Better still, the test results showed only limited filtration was required to bring it to drinking water standard.’’
We were thrilled to find a good water source, but the rural location brought another challenge: how to power the pump and filtration system without access to mains electricity.
Thanks to our extensive network of industry partners, we’re now in the process of installing a fully solar-powered system. It will provide all the water needed to support an equestrian yard, a smallholding, and a home—perfectly aligned with our customer’s vision of living off-grid and sustainably.
We’ll give the last word to Chris,
‘’We’re so pleased we chose SIS. They’ve been fantastic to deal with and their guys onsite couldn’t have worked harder. Although their new overalls were no longer bright orange by the time they’d finished.’’
